History and Origin

San Andrés Mixquic is an Indigenous village of pre-Hispanic origin in southern Mexico City. Its cemetery surrounds the 16th-century Augustinian convent of San Andrés Apóstol. Every year families clean and decorate the graves with marigolds, and on the night of November 2 they light them with candles in the Alumbrada.
