Mérida's city government has organized this festival for over a decade to celebrate Hanal Pixán, the Maya “food of the souls”. Its high point is the Walk of the Souls: thousands of people with skull face paint and regional dress walk at night among altars and candles, from the General Cemetery to the San Juan district.
